In the heart of Sunderland, a transformative initiative made waves in the community—The Small House Project, formerly known as The Dolls House Project. We have had the privilege of witnessing the profound impact of this project through the story of Anna, a quiet yet intelligent participant who found her voice amidst the colours of creativity.

Anna attended workshops delivered at a local primary school, a familiar environment for her as it was also where her children studied. Despite her reserved demeanour, Anna was highly engaged, absorbing every lesson with keen attention. However, it was during the painting and decorating phase of the small house that her true feelings began to emerge.

When it came time to choose colours for the bedroom, Anna boldly decided to paint the walls black. This choice was more than just an aesthetic preference; it reflected her inner struggles. Anna explained that the colour represented how she felt at home, particularly in the context of her and her father's battle with depression and her own challenges with weight.

The Small House Project provided more than just a creative outlet; it fostered an environment where Anna felt safe to share her emotions. Through this dynamic workshop, she opened up about her feelings and experiences, allowing the facilitators to listen and understand her needs. Recognising the importance of mental health, the team seized the opportunity to connect Anna with further support, guiding her to seek assistance from a doctor.

"The creative workshops didn’t just teach me about decorating; they gave me the space to express my feelings and seek the help I needed."

Anna's journey illustrated the powerful intersection of creativity and emotional support within the Small House Project. It wasn’t just about building homes; it was about building lives. By nurturing the minds and hearts of participants like Anna, HJEM demonstrated its commitment to transforming communities, one story at a time.

Join us in celebrating the resilience and courage of individuals like Anna as we continue our mission to empower those in need through creativity and support. Together, we brought light into even the darkest corners.
